Denied use of loo in flight, man abducts DGCA employee, steals mobile phones

New Delhi: Delhi Police has arrested a 24-year-old man and a cab driver for allegedly abducting an employee of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) from his office. The key accused, identified as Vaibhav Chaturvedi, was miffed because he was not allowed to use the washroom right before landing on a flight he traveled in a day before.

The bizarre story started on January 7. Vaibhav, a resident of Delhi’s Rohini boarded a Go Air flight from Varanasi to New Delhi. When the flight was about to land, he requested to use the washroom but was denied.

Miffed at the incident, Vaibhav, along with his associate cab driver Sonu aka Kanwar, went to the DGCA office the next day to file a complaint. But, according to Vaibhav, when he reached the DGCA office, he found three to four employees in an intoxicated state. This further aggrieved him.

At this point, Vaibhav claimed to be a senior officer and dragged a DGCA employee Surender with him to Safdarjung Hospital for a medical check-up. While the hospital refused to conduct a medical check-up without the police request, Vaibhav snatched Surender’s phone and ID card, the police said, adding that the accused had also snatched the phone in possession of a Rajnish, a friend and colleague of Surender who had rushed to Safdarjung Hospital.

After the failed attempt to put Surender through a medical test, Vaibhav said that he will take both the DGCA employees to a police station in Kotla. However, he dropped them off at Kotla red flight near BP Marg. He gave the two his own mobile number and left without returning their mobiles or ID card.

During the investigation, the police traced the number of cab used in the crime through CCTV cameras installed in the DGCA office and Safdarjung Hospital. The mobile number of the accused, given by him, was also traced to an address in Varanasi. Further investigation revealed the accused lived at an apartment in Rohini in Delhi.
