First consignment of Covaxin arrives in Kolkata

Kolkata: The first consignment of Covaxin for the state arrived in the city on Friday. The van carrying 1,12,960 doses drove into the Central Family Welfare Stores at Bagbazar at 3.57pm from Kolkata airport.

“Unlike Covishield that has 10 doses in a vial, a Covaxin contains 20 doses. So we have got 5,648 vials. They will be in custody of the central stores till the rollout for the second tier of recipients are finalised,” said a health department official. In the second phase, cops and other frontline workers will be vaccinated.

The consignment from Hyderabad reached Kolkata at 2.31pm on Friday. The AirAsia India passenger aircraft carried in its cargo hold 23 boxes of the vaccine that has been developed in India. Apart from Bengal’s share the shipment had an additional 55,360 doses for other states that was taken to the central government’s depot at Hastings. “We had made provision for the trucks to enter the operational area and park next to the aircraft so that the vaccines could be swiftly transferred,” an airport official said.
