Ahead of inoculation drive, 6.5 lakh vaccine doses arrive in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: In, perhaps, one of the most anticipated events in recent times, Covid-19 vaccines finally arrived in Bengaluru on Tuesday from Pune’s Serum Institute of India, on a SpiceJet aircraft which touched down at Kempegowda International Airport.

The first consignment of 6,47,500 Covishield vaccines was shifted to a storage facility in Bengaluru ahead of the vaccination drive, which is scheduled to commence on Friday. The second consignment is expected to arrive by road on Wednesday.

The media contingent had swelled considerably when the aircraft, carrying 54 boxes of vaccines, landed at 11.45am. Early on Tuesday, doses of the vaccine were shipped from Pune to different parts of the country including Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Patna, Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Bengaluru.

After various procedures at KIA, the consignment was loaded on a truck and transported to a state health department storage facility near Anand Rao Circle. One box slipped from a loader's hands while moving it into the storage facility, but those around were able to hold on to it before it hit the ground.
