Woman trying to smuggle gold worth Rs 56 lakh held at KIA

Bengaluru: In the biggest seizure of gold at Kempegowda International Airport so far this year, a woman passenger was nabbed on Thursday for attempting to smuggle solid gold worth Rs 56.6 lakh.

She was booked by customs sleuths and the metal was seized. Sources with the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Bangalore Customs said the woman, said to be aged 48, landed at KIA on Thursday morning in a FlyDubai flight (FZ 4007) from Dubai.

Customs officers suspected something amiss about her behaviour during routine profiling of passengers after arrival of flights, mainly from the Gulf region. On questioning, officers found she was a resident of Thane in Maharashtra, but she failed to give proper reasons for her short visit to Dubai and her decision to land in Bengaluru airport. The customs team frisked her belongings, only to find solid gold, which was concealed inside in a cavity in her bag to avoid detection by airport authorises.
