Kolkata: West Bengal joined several states in India to report infections due to the new strain of the Covid-19 virus after one youth in Kolkata tested positive for the mutated coronavirus variant.
Around 10 days ago, a medical college official’s son returned from the United Kingdom and the youth’s Covid-19 test result turned out to be positive.
He was under treatment at a government Covid-19 facility in the city after the infection, and upon further probe, his sample showed the new strain that was discovered in Britain 10 days ago.
He’s now been shifted to an isolation facility near the Kolkata airport and his swab sample has been sent to Delhi for further testing.
The state health secretary is monitoring the situation closely and will be holding a meeting with the health department to discuss the current situation amid New Year celebrations.
