863 gms gold worth Rs 43.92 lakh seized by Customs, one arrested

Chennai: Officials of the Customs Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) today seized 863 gms of gold worth Rs 43.92 lakh from a passenger who arrived from Dubai at the Anna International airport here. 
 A release from the office of the Commissioner of Customs said based on information, one Thiruvedathu Gani (32) of Chennai and Mohamed Niyas (36 ) of Pudukkottai, who arrived from Dubai by a Fly Dubai flight were intercepted at the exit on suspicion of carrying gold. On personal search of Gani four bundles of gold paste weighing 655 gms were recovered from rectum which on extraction yielded 565 gms of gold valued at Rs. 28.75 lakhs. He was arrested. 
 The release said two gold paste bundles weighing 340 gms were recovered from rectum of Niyas which on extraction yielded 298 gms of gold valued at Rs 15.17 lakh. In all, 863 gms of 24 K purity gold valued at Rs 43.92 lakhs was recovered and seized under the Customs Act, 1962.
