New parking lots at Chennai airport may be complete by April

Chennai: As multi-level parking lots at Chennai airport take shape, the Airports Authorities of India (AAI) has begun laying access roads from the facility to the terminals. A new traffic arrangement for vehicles inside the airport campus is being made.

Work to build the road to the terminals began last week. It will include modifying a road that leads from the existing car parking facility to the terminals. An AAI official said the road will connect the two multi-level car parks to the terminals located 100m away.

“As it cuts across the campus, a few pavements and roads inside the campus will have to be realigned. There will be a pathway from the GST Road to the car parking complex which will also have a hotel and a commercial complex. The road is needed for cars to drop passengers, return and enter the parking lot,” he said.

The two multi-level facilities that are being built on either side of the airport metro station are expected to have a bridge connecting the two buildings to the tube that runs in front of the passenger terminals. This will enable people to park and access the terminal without exiting the building.

“The construction is nearing completion and the structure is likely to be ready for commissioning in April. When the facility is ready, the existing parking lot will not be used and the traffic flow of vehicles inside the airport campus will be rearranged,” the official said.
