Compensation for Kerala air crash: HC directs for quick decision

Kochi: The Kerala high court has directed the central government and Air India Express Ltd to take a quick decision on compensation claims filed by relatives of the victims of Karipur air crash last year.

Justice N Nagaresh issued the directive after considering a petition filed by the legal heirs of Sharafuddin of Kunnamangalam in Kozhikode. They have sought a court declaration that the victims of the air crash are entitled to a higher compensation. Air India Express flight 1344 had crash landed at Kozhikode Calicut International Airport (CCJ) on August 7th last year.

Though Sharafuddin’s wife and children were also passengers in the flight, they had escaped with injuries. They have now contended before the high court that those who die and those who suffer injuries are entitled to a compensation of upto SDR113,100 (around Rs1.19 crore) as per Montreal Convention of 1999. Legal heirs of victims are also entitled to seek a higher compensation if eligibility can be proven, the plea said while alleging that legal heirs of the victims of Karipur air crash have not been given even the lowest amount of compensation as per international standards.
