Low-cost airline SpiceJet expects to resume Boeing 737 MAX aircraft operations by March, a senior company official told CNBC-TV18.
The energy-efficient and cost-saving aircraft has been grounded since nearly two years following safety concerns.
While the aircraft has been approved by the US aviation regulator Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), it is yet to receive a nod from European aviation regulator European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
"The Directorate General of Civil Aviation will conduct its own checks and processes before granting permission to MAX to resume operations. However, I think DGCA is likely to start that process once the aircraft receives green signal from EASA," the official added.
On November 18, the FAA rescinded the order that halted commercial operations of Boeing 737-8s and 737-9s. The move allowed airlines that are under the FAA's jurisdiction, including those in the US, to take the steps necessary to resume service and Boeing to begin making deliveries.
Days later, Ryanair announced a firm order for 75 additional 737 MAX airplanes, increasing its order book to 210 such jets.
As India prepares for MAX resumption, aircraft manufacturer Boeing has already placed a 737 MAX simulator at Noida in India, CNBC-TV18 exclusively reported in November 2020.
