Air India Express flight with 64 passengers on board suffers mishap at Vijayawada airport; all passengers safe

Vijayawada: An Air India Express flight from Doha carrying around 64 passengers lost control and hit a pole while landing at Vijayawada International Airport on Saturday. No passengers were injured in the incident.

The incident happened at around 5pm on Saturday when while landing on the runway, the wing of the aircraft collided with the high beam lamp post which is placed adjacent to the runway near parking.

As per the information from the airport authorities, Air India Express service number IX1676 Doha- Vijayawada- Tiruchirapalli, carrying 64 passengers, landed at Vijayawada. Altogether 19 out of total passengers have to get down at Vijayawada and aircraft would further depart to Tiruchurapalli with 45 passengers.

The aircraft on its way to the taxi bay of the airport hit a high beam lamp post. Pilot responded immediately and switched off the engine of the aircraft.

Airport authorities including emergency teams rushed to the spot and started rescuing passengers. Technical teams started operations to repair the aircraft. Passengers who travelled in the aircraft said that they just felt a small vibration after the aircraft hit lamp post.

“Pilot announced that we have landed at Vijayawada and we are in preparations to get down from the plane. All of a sudden the accident happened and we heard a small sound. Pilot asked us not to panic and airport authorities rushed to us immediately and took us to the departure block safely,” said Rama Reddy, a passenger.

The staff of the aircraft said that the accident happened due to poor visibility and cloudy atmosphere.
