Drone usage permit to collect farm yield data

Mumbai: Drones can now be used for remote sensing data collection in agricultural areas of hundred districts for gram panchayat level yield estimation, under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), said a press release issued by the ministry of civil aviation (MoCA) on Friday.

PMFBY is government-sponsored insurance scheme for farm yields and it extends coverage for losses incurred from the pre-sowing to the post-harvest stage of cropping cycle.

MoCA and the civil aviation regulator granted conditional exemption for Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) usage to the ministry of agriculture & farmers welfare (MoAFW).

"The exemption shall be valid from the one year from the date of issue of the permission letter or until the operationalisation of the Digital Sky Platform, whichever is earlier," it said.

Similar conditional exemption was granted to Kochi Metro Rail for its Integrated Urban Regeneration and Water Transport System Project (IURWTS) early this week. These exemption are valid only if all conditions and limitations are strictly adhered to, according to the ministry.
