Air travel in the time of Covid: What are vaccine passports and how countries are creating their own versions

Singapore: In mid-February, Israel became the first nation to implement a domestic vaccine certification system that allowed those who have been vaccinated to access certain facilities such as gyms and restaurants, and attend public events. This certificate now may also be replicated worldwide to aid full resumption of international air travel.

Multiple countries, private organisations, technology firms and the World Health Organisation (WHO) have been planning to roll out a certification system that enables people to travel around the world seamlessly.

China has already introduced its version of these “vaccine passports” last week in a bid to boost domestic and international travel. The European Union (EU) and the United States are also considering building their own certification platforms. Nations like Greece and Cyprus, on the other hand, have set up their own mechanisms to facilitate travel between their countries and Israel which has already vaccinated 44 per cent of its population.
