Mangaluru International Airport accounts for 95.12 kg gold seizure in four years

Mangaluru: From 2017 onwards, 95.12 kg of gold was confiscated till now at the airport here when the yellow metal was being smuggled. This gold was seized from the passengers arriving from the Gulf countries. This information was provided by the assistant commissioner (customs) here to a query under the Right to Information Act.

He also said that after undertaking steps as enumerated by Customs Act 1962, the gold so seized is being disposed of from time to time.

The airport customs staff had found gold being smuggled into India through the airport in the forms of chocolates, chewing gum, intricate weaving in burquas, face cream, makeup kit, electronic equipment, pen, napkin, stuffed into the wheels of trolleys, and in liquid or tablet form stuffed into the rectum, beside some other forms.

As much as 19.45 kg gold out of the above was recovered during 2017-18, 41.58 kg in 2018-19, 22.37 kg in 2019-20 and 11.72 kg in 2020-21 till January. The total value of this gold is Rs 32.98 crore.
