Unprecedented harassment at airport because of PM travel: Adhir writes to CEC

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Saturday wrote to Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora saying he was subjected to “unprecedented harassment” at the Kolkata airport as he was “stopped for hours” because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival at the terminal.

The Congress leader said he had to cancel a political programme because of the delay. “I have been subjected to unprecedented harassment resulting (in) cancellation of (a) pre-planned election program on date, in that as I was proceeding by a vehicle to the helicopter to fly out (of) Dumdum Airport on a pre-planned political programme, my vehicle was stopped for hours. Hours later I came to know that the SPG stopped all movements owing to the PM was to land for attending a political programme though helicopter parking path and aircraft taxiing path is totally different route,” he wrote.

Chowdhury, the leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha and the president of the party’s West Bengal unit, was at the airport to take a chopper to Basirhat to address a campaign rally.

He said while the Prime Minister’s “security on any official purpose is supposed to be the prime concern”, it should not be at “the cost and harassment to another political leader” when he is travelling to attend a political programme.
