Goa: Airport parking charge under scanner again

Panaji: Allegations of malpractices and cheating by the parking contractor at Goa International Airport have once again surfaced and some frequent fliers have called for action to be taken against the contractor for fraudulently extracting money from hapless commuters.

Sangolda resident Karan Bhagat fell victim to one such attempt on March 17 when he arrived at Goa International Airport to drop off his mother. He was surprised to receive a slip which said commercial vehicle even though he arrived in his private car.

After dropping off his mother, Bhagat drove out of the terminal forecourt and was stopped by the parking attendant who asked him to fork out Rs 50.

“This slip had the time I entered the departure lane printed on it. The operative also told me verbally that I would have only five minutes to drop off my passenger, or I would be charged. This information was not written on the slip. The word ‘Commercial’ was written on the slip,” Bhagat said.

While exiting the airport, the parking operator said Bhagat had exceeded the time limit, and charged him Rs 50. Bhagat said that he had taken six minutes to exit the departure lane. He complained to Goa Airport Director Gagan Malik against the contractor MS Enterprises but is yet to get a reply.

“Eighteen days have now passed since I brought this to the notice of the airport director, but I am yet to hear back, even though he assured me that he would look into the matter and revert ASAP,” Bhagat said.

“Twelve of our staff were in isolation because of Covid-19 and three of my staff members had Covid-19 because of which we were unable to respond in time to Bhagat,” Malik said.

Rejecting Bhagat’s allegations, Malik said, “We will look into his specific complaint, but as per our initial inquiry, it appears that Bhagat exceeded the time limit and should have in fact been charged Rs 340.”
