Vaccine drive at airport for employees in 18-44 age group

Kolkata: The vaccination drive for the 18-44 age group got underway at the Kolkata airport on Thursday with young employees of air traffic services (ATS), communication, navigation & surveillance (CNS) team, fire fighting personnel and ground operations staff receiving their first jab.

“Around 200 persons from the four departments, including around 120 ATCOs, received the jab on Thursday. Given the limited number of vaccines available for the 18-44 age group, all 500-odd that are eligible could not be inoculated in a single session. Another session will be organised for the 300 people that are left,” said an Airports Authority of India (AAI) official.

A 28-year-old ATCO, who was among the youngest lot to get the jab along with a few 27-year-old new joinees, said he was extremely relieved to now have some sort of protection against the virus.

“We have all been working right through the pandemic and are frontline workers. But unlike healthcare staff, policemen, civic workers and even those who were deputed for election duty, we did not get the frontline staff status. The Air Traffic Controllers’ Guild, the umbrella organisation of ATCOs, made the appeal to AAI that organised the session,” the ATCO recounted.
