1.2 kg gold worth Rs.57.75 lakh seized at airport, one arrested

Chennai: Customs officials today seized 1.2 kg gold valued at Rs 57.75 lakh and arrested a passenger, who arrived from Dubai, at the Anna International airport here.

A press release from the Office of the Commissioner of Customs said based on intelligence, one Mohamed Badurudeen (23) of Nagapattinam, who arrived from Dubai by an Emirates flight, was intercepted at the exit as he was hurrying through and appeared to be nervous when stopped and questioned.

His hand and check in baggage and a 55" LED TV he was carrying was taken up for examination.

On opening the back cover of TV, two heavy black rectangular bars were found ingeniously concealed inside TV speakers.

The officials cut open the speaker and found two gold bars concealed in it.

The gold bars totally weighed 1.2 kg and it was valued at Rs.57.75 lakh. The passenger was arrested.
