After the Adani Group hiked charges by much as 10-times at Lucknow airport, ‘turnaround charges’ at the airport have been raised drastically for private jets and international flights, according to news reports.
Citing aviation industry expert, The Economic Times said that after Lucknow, charges at other Adani group-operated airports may witness similar hikes.
The report states that ground handling companies have “leeway to increase charges” for a few things, despite a lot of the charges being regulated by either the government or Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA).
The AERA, decides on charges at airports for five years. In the case of Lucknow airport, the five-year period ended last year but the decision on charges for the next five years is pending, as the Adani Group took over the airport late last year. The airport operator in Lucknow has hired a new ground handling company which has led to the increase in tariffs, the report added.
In January 2021, the Adani Group on Tuesday signed concession agreements with the Airports Authority of India for the management, operations and development of Guwahati, Jaipur and Thiruvananthapuram airports.
The Centre had in February 2019 privatised six major airports of the country -- Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Mangaluru, Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati.
