Air traffic at Chennai airport yet to see recovery

Chennai: Passenger traffic revival continues to be sluggish at Chennai airport as it has dipped further in the first month of the financial year.

The number of passengers has reduced in April when compared to the previous month. The passenger traffic was 8.48lakh in March but it has come down to 6.65lakh in April, as per statistics from AAI.

Other airports too have shown a decline but revival was quicker for them and the number of passengers had already edged closer to the pre-Covid-19 numbers in March 2021. Hyderabad and Kochi had registered an increase in passenger traffic compared to the pre-Covid-19 level in March 2021. Chennai is ranked six after Kolkata among the busiest airports.

Sources said that pandemic restrictions by different states and the need for e-pass to enter TN and sluggish resumption of businesses in March and April were the reason for poor passenger numbers in Chennai.

"The trend has continued to reflect in the revival of traffic too. There is hardly any international passenger traffic and domestic movement is further hit by the lockdown introduced by the state after the election," said an airport official.

Hit by losses after a dip in passenger and aircraft traffic for a year and deferring of payment by Mumbai and Delhi airports, Airports Authority of India (AAI) is considering cutting down on repairs and maintenance in all departments including civil, electrical, electronics and IT infrastructure which may have an impact on passenger experience.
