Mumbai: Airlines in India had begun vaccination drives for their employees in May and by now over 50 % of airline employees in India are most likely vaccinated with their first dose. This week then, airlines began operating flights with fully vaccinated crew, making air travel safer as a mode of transportation during the pandemic.
An AirAsiaIndia spokesperson said that 99.5 % of their ``guest-facing operational staff including pilots, cabin crew, security, ground staff and catering operations staff have been inoculated with their first dose.'' Air India, the first airline to begin an employee vaccination drive, said that around 11,500 employees have been vaccinated with the first dose. This includes 1100 out of the 1560 pilots and about 3000 out of 4140 cabin crew, said the Air India spokesperson adding that about 550 Air India pilots and flight attendants are fully vaccinated with both the doses. An IndiGo spokesperson said that about 28,000 out of the total 35,000 employees, that is more than 80 % have received the first dose of vaccine. A Vistara spokesperson said that of the 4000 employees the airline has, 100 % of eligible staff have received the first dose of vaccine. ``People who are being treated for Covid or those who recovered recently haven't been vaccinated as they aren't eligible yet,'' the Vistara spokesperson said. A SpiceJet spokesperson said that the airline's entire operating cabin crew, about 1100 of them have received their first jab. A GoAir spokesperson said that 60 % of its employees have received the first dose.
Early this week Vistara operated a Delhi-Mumbai flight with a fully vaccinated crew and on Friday Air India Express did the same with a Delhi-Dubai flight, while AirAsia India upped the numbers by operating nine domestic flights, fully with crew that had received both the doses of vaccine. Air India, on the other hand, has already operated three flights this month with fully vaccinated crew, said an Air India spokesperson.
