Mumbai: Three passengers, including two senior citizens sustained injuries after a Vistara flight from Mumbai encountered severe turbulence minutes before landing in Kolkata airport on Monday evening.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has initiated an investigation, said DGCA director Arun Kumar.
The B737-800 aircraft, with 113 passengers on board ran into severe turbulence between 20,000 feet and 17,000 feet when it was on a descend to land in Kolkata, said a DGCA official adding that the process of downloading the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder has begun.
Among those injured was a 61-year old woman passenger on seat 39D. "Her right hand sustained a fracture. She has been hospitalized," said the source. A 77-year old male passenger, seated on 26 A received a "spinal tenderness injury" and was hospitalized as well. The third passenger, a 36 year old male on seat 30B, received a minor cut on forehead and was released after first aid, said the source.
Vistara in a statement said: “Flight UK775 operating Mumbai-Kolkata on 7 June 2021 encountered severe turbulence 15 minutes before landing. According to preliminary reports, the turbulence caused injuries to a few passengers, who were provided first aid during flight and immediate medical assistance upon arrival in Kolkata. We are saddened by this unfortunate experience our customers had, and are closely monitoring the health status of those injured. We are investigating the incident on priority, and will share a further update at the earliest."
