Hyderabad airport sees air traffic double in June as domestic travel picks up

Hyderabad: Months after the devastating second wave of Covid-19 ripped through the country, domestic travel is slowly picking up, bringing cheer to the tourism industry.

With vaccine distribution making progress along with relaxed travel restrictions, quarantine protocols, compulsory RT-PCR tests, travellers are gaining confidence and have started feeling comfortable with making travel plans.

GMR-run Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad saw an increase in the number of flights from all domestic sectors.

The airport recorded a gradual rise in Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) in June.

From just over 100 on June 1, the ATMs increased by nearly 100 per cent in one month, touching 199 on June 27.

“From around 10,000 passengers on June 1st, the number of passengers in a single day touched around 22,000 on 27th June. The airport witnessed four lakh domestic passengers and around 35,000 international travellers in June,” airport authorities told India Today.

The International Airport is connected to 42 destinations in the domestic sector and 10 international sectors.

Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Vizag are the top five sectors that registered the largest growth in the last month.

“In terms of number of passengers, Mumbai recorded the highest growth i.e. 84 per cent during the same period. Visiting Friends & Relatives (VFR), SME business travel have largely contributed to the increase in passenger numbers,” added GMR Hyderabad Airport.
