Zimbabwean held at Bengaluru airport with heroin worth Rs 56 crore

Bengaluru: A 35-year-old Zimbabwean woman was nabbed at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) with 8kg of heroin worth Rs 56 crore. The contraband was hidden in her trolley bag with a false bottom and was unearthed by investigators soon after she was intercepted near the immigration bay at the airport.

Sources said the incident unfolded on Wednesday morning after Emirates airlines flight EK 564 touched down at 8.55am. Sleuths from Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) carried out passenger profiling of those disembarking from the Dubai flight.

"We intercepted the woman, who was heading to clear immigration. She had come to India on a medical visa . But her responses to questions from investigators raised suspicion, following which they inspected her luggage. Thorough examination of the trolley bag she carried unearthed a false bottom, which was simply hard to detect. It was dismantled and the heroin was found inside," said an airport source.

It is suspected that the woman boarded the flight with the drugs from Johannesburg and reached Bengaluru via Dubai. The sleuths arrested the woman, booked her under the NDPS Act for drug trafficking and produced her in a city court on Thursday morning through video conferencing, following which the magistrate remanded her to judicial custody. She has been lodged at Parappana Agrahara prison complex.
