Aviation secretary calls for a meeting with domestic airlines to review air traffic issues

New Delhi: Sources tell ET Now that the Aviation secretary will be meeting domestic airlines likely tomorrow to review issues in the aviation sector. Airlines like SpiceJet, Indigo, Vistara, Air Asia have been asked to submit their proposals on issues they are facing due to low passenger traffic issues.

The aviation sector is facing a turbulence again due to the second wave of covid-19 and airlines seemed to have expressed concerns on the likelihood of third wave of covid-19. Sources tell ET Now that tomorrow's meeting will discuss key issues around passenger traffic, discounts, getting consumers back to air and price bands.

The government recently imposed a flight capacity of 50% due to the onset of the Covid second wave. Airlines were allowed to deploy a flight capacity of 80% as per pre covid levels in the month of February 2021 since there was normalcy seen in passenger traffic. "This is a general review meeting to take inputs from airlines and to coordinate on what can be best done for the sector," shares a source on condition of anonymity.

ET Now learns that government and airline representatives will also discuss on incentives and schemes for travelers who are vaccinated, in order to encourage safe air traveling which will help to regain confidence in the sector.

Passenger traffic fell by almost 50% in the month of May after more than 3,50,000 lakh passengers traveled Indian skies daily in the month of March 2021.
