North East to get international airports for better connectivity

According to Union Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region, Jintendra Singh, Manipur, and Agartala will be getting two more international airports so as to have increased connectivity in the region. The northeast region is still widely left out as far as flight connections are concerned, but all that should change with the two new airports.

The Minister further said that such a facility is also going to come up in Kohima, while the one at Itanagar is all set to be functional by the end of the year. According to Singh, even though he has never visited the North East since taking charge of the ministry, he has come to understand through interactions that connectivity is still an issue here.

Speaking at an event, the Minister said, "At present, there is an international airport in Guwahati. We are planning to have airports in Imphal and Agartala as well."

He further said that the golden period of the North East region has finally arrived now, at a time when the country is looking to strengthen its economy post COVID. Regions such as these with unexplored sectors will be looked at.
