Rapid PCR test for international fliers at Kolkata airport to give Covid report in 15 minutes

Kolkata: A rapid PCR test capable of delivering the report within 15 minutes will be launched at Kolkata airport once the United Arab Emirates removes India from the red list and allows people to fly from India to Dubai and other cities there. Passengers will be issued boarding passes only once they clear the test.

Kolkata airport director C Pattabhi said HLL Lifecare Ltd (HLL), a Government of India enterprise that has set up a Covid testing laboratory at the airport, will offer the Rapid PCR test as soon as UAE gives its nod to passenger flights from India.

Now, flights from UAE are allowed to arrive with passengers but the return flight is not allowed to carry any flier. UAE and several other countries have marked India on the no-fly list to stop the spread of Delta mutation of Covid-19.

“The laboratory is currently offering Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) and TrueNat for domestic departure and international arrival. When Emirates, Fly Dubai and IndiGo resume flights to the UAE, the Rapid PCR test will be offered at the international departure wing,” the director said.
