AAI mulls shifting international arrivals to new building in Chennai

Chennai: As work to build a new airport terminal is getting over, the AAI has started discussion with airlines, customs, CISF and other agencies regarding moving international arrival operations to the building.

The integrated terminal which is coming up between the existing domestic and international terminals will be ready to commission early next year. The major work is over and interior and cladding work is going on.

An Airports Authority of India (AAI) official said "The discussions to shift the facilities including baggage carousels, counters, offices, shops and other utilities from the international arrival to the new building will be speeded up in the coming weeks," he added.

"Almost all facilities will have to be shifted to the new integrated terminal building because the existing international arrival old building will be demolished and rebuilt. International flights will be received in the new building till rebuilding work is completed."

He also said that a migration plan would be prepared soon so that all agencies will be ready to move when the building is commissioned. "This is being done early on as demolition of the old arrival building should start on time," said an official. AAI has set a deadline of December 2022 to finish rebuilding of the international arrival. It will be merged with the integrated terminal.
