Kolkata flyer count doubles as restrictions for RT-PCR test lifted for the ones fully vaccinated

Kolkata: Kolkata's traffic traveling through the airport has doubled in nearly a month. Earlier, getting an RT-PCR test was a mandate to travel interstate, but now with vaccination drives increasing day-by-day and the number of people getting vaccinated, the government decided to lift off the test for those fully vaccinated.

The recorded passenger data on July 2 at the Kolkata airport was 19,658, whereas, on August 2, the recorded data reached 36,079, combining both arrival and departure. The recorded data for July 30 was 21,239.

With the passenger count increasing, the flights are becoming more regular. Airlines have introduced several more flights to meet the demand. On August 2,130 flights took off from the Kolkata airport. For the first time in four months, the airport witnessed so many flights take-off.

The domestic flight capacity was also increased by the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCa) last month. The ministry decided to increase the capacity from 50% to 65%.

Highlighting the gradual increase in the number of departing flights, it was reported how the number of departing flights from Kolkata airport had touched the 100-mark twice in July after the gap of nearly three months, the highest being 108 flights on July 16 carrying 11,656 passengers, as per the Times of India report.

After a complete suspension of two months, the government had permitted the domestic flight operations from May 25, 2020, with a 33% capacity of their pre-Covid level.

The airport saw a sudden increase from 33 to later 70, and then an 80% rise in the flights. This measure to increase the flight count was taken considering the fall in the covid cases in the country. But, later again in April 2021, the ministry had to cut down the flight count from 80 to 50% from June 1.
