Red sanders worth Rs 6 crore seized at Kempegowda International Airport

Bengaluru: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence sleuths on Thursday seized red sanders worth Rs 6 crore that were set to be smuggled to Dubai from the Bengaluru air cargo wing at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).

The large number of logs were hidden inside plastic tubes and the consignment was declared to customs as plastic items meant to be exported to the Gulf. This is believed to be the biggest seizure of red sanders at KIA in recent years.

Sources with DRI’s Bengaluru unit said following inputs on the red sanders, a team reached the cargo terminal on Thursday afternoon.

"We received specific intelligence that a smuggling gang from outside the state was trying to send large quantities of red sanders to Dubai. Our team inspected the cargo complex and found many logs hidden in plastic tubes used for construction. The consignment was booked for shipping to Dubai,” said an investigating officer.

Airport sources suspect the red sanders had been transported by road from Tamil Nadu.
