Kolkata airport goes under water, blame on Metro construction

Parts of the Kolkata airport went under water on Tuesday morning after spells of heavy rain.

A section of airport officials blamed the Metro construction work for the flooding. The Metro authorities denied the allegation.

On Tuesday morning, there was water on the approach road to the terminal building and in front of the arrival area. Officials said portions of the apron area on the airfield side were waterlogged, too.

“Parts of the drainage systems have choked because of the Metro construction work, causing the waterlogging. Another reason for the flooding is construction of concrete slabs for the Metro project along the roads, which led to the lowering of the road level,” an airport official said.

Metro had in August reported that large parts of the airport had gone under water following spells of heavy rain. Even fliers had to wade through water to board a bus after getting off a flight on their way to the terminal.
