India Approves $3 Billion Purchase of Military Transport Aircraft

The Indian government has approved the purchase of 56 C-295MW transport aircraft for the air force to replace the aging Avro 748.

Sixteen of the Airbus Defence and Space aircraft will come in flyaway condition within 48 months of signing the $3 billion contract, while the rest will be built within 10 years in the country by the TATA consortium. This is the first time a private entity will manufacture a military aircraft in India.

A government statement revealed that the aircraft will feature a rear ramp door for quick reaction and para-dropping of troops and cargo. Its 10-ton carrying capacity will be an increase over its predecessor’s 6-ton capacity in addition to its technological improvement over the decades-old British aircraft.

The statement added that the C-295MW will include an indigenous electronic warfare suite with “a large number of detailed parts, sub-assemblies and major component assemblies of aerostructure.”

The project is expected to generate “600 highly skilled jobs directly, over 3,000 indirect jobs and an additional 3,000 medium skill employment opportunities,” in addition to creating “specialized infrastructure in the form of hangars, buildings, aprons, and taxiways.”

“Before completion of deliveries, ‘D’ Level servicing facility MRO (maintenance repair and operation) for C-295MW aircraft are scheduled to be set up in India. It is expected that this facility will act as a regional MRO hub for various variants of C-295 aircraft,” the statement added.
