Air India Staff Refuse To Vacate Flats; Union Threatens Strike Against This Move

The Joint Action Committee of AI Unions sent a letter to Mumbai’s regional labour commissioner on Wednesday.

The letter intent was to threaten to embark on an indefinite strike on November 2 if the matter is not resolved.

As per the rules, a union must give two weeks’ notice before going on strike.

According to a report in the Times of India, Air India employees received a letter from the airline on October 5.

The letter said to sign a compliance letter by October 20 stating that they will depart their company-provided housing within six months after the airline’s privatisation.

So earlier there was a decision by the GoM on AI divestment, the decision was regarding the AI employees to stay in the company-provided residences after the divestment ‘for six months or until the property is monetised, whichever comes first,’ and that if they stayed longer than that, they would be fined Rs 10 lakh in Delhi and Rs 15 lakh in Mumbai.

For the duration of an unlawful extended stay, they would be charged double the market rent.
