Coimbatore: Flight services increase by two in October

Coimbatore: The city airport is slowly getting busier with more flights resuming operations after a lull that was induced by the second Covid-19 wave.

In October, two new flights were introduced to Hyderabad and Bengaluru from the city, taking the total number of flights being operated from the city to 18, compared to 16 in September. The city now operates three flights each to Hyderabad and Bengaluru alone. There is also an international flight to Sharjah.

N Muguntha Kumar, an aviation enthusiast, said the airport used to handle 40 incoming flights and as many outgoing flights during the pre-Covid times. “However, a comparison will be unfair as many of the 40 flights were smaller aircraft that could carry just up to 78 passengers.”

The airport’s performance in operating scheduled flights is also commendable. It is ranked third in the country and 32nd globally in this front in September as per a report by an international monthly - OAG magazine. According to the report, the airport had operated 95% scheduled flights in September compared to 92.5% in August.

According to the magazine, Tuticorin was ranked second globally and first in India in operating scheduled flights. Travel agents said most people were now travelling for either business purposes or leisure.
