Air India employees feel Like Maharajas, finally get their salaries on time

As the countdown ends for the announcement of the winning bidder at Air India, employees of the airline have, for the first time since 2017, been paid salaries on the first of this month.

"Call it the Tata effect... We got our basic salaries on the 1st. I have never seen this since I joined Air India in 2017," said an Air India employee.

Cash-strapped AI has not been punctual with salaries and generally pays wages on the seventh or tenth day of the month.

In an email reply, AI said that salaries are accorded top priority. "In Air India, salaries to employees have always been accorded top priority. However, we would not like to make any specific comment on internal issues such as these," the airline said in an email response.

The government is likely to announce the sale of 100% stake in Air India, Air India Express and a 50% stake in ground handling company AISATS to a private party this week.

Among other issues of employees, the government has also decided on bearing the cost of transferring the provident fund of its employees from a trust to Employees Provident Fund Organisation. The airline had earlier asked employees to bear the cost of transferring their PF, which employees had objected to.
