Chandigarh airport all set to launch cargo facility next month

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh International Airport is all set to start its cargo facility in the first week of November. According to a report published in the Hindustan Times (HT), the rates for both domestic and international cargo, including perishable goods, have been fixed by the airport authorities.

The cargo complex, built at a cost of Rs 11.5 crores, has come up on 14,127 square meters. Five cargo sheds have been built for the cargo facility, stated the reports.

Ajay Bhardwaj, chief executive officer, Chandigarh International Airport Limited (CHAIL), was quoted by HT as saying that the cargo facility at the airport will be the biggest after Delhi in north India and reasonable rates will be offered as compared to other airports. Bhardwaj said that they are hopeful to start the cargo facility by November 1.

Air cargo facility will ensure speedy transportation of commercial goods through an air carrier as CHAIL only provides a common screening facility for domestic cargo as of now. Other airlines such as IndiGo and Vistara handle their own freight.

The cargo facility at the Chandigarh airport was announced by the Punjab government in the budget this year. The new facility will give a boost to the industry and will also provide better access to international and domestic markets.
