Coimbatore airport expansion: Property owners stage protest

Coimbatore: House owners from Uppilayapalayam, whose land the state government has proposed to take for the expansion of the Coimbatore airport, staged a protest at the collector office on Wednesday urging the district administration to find suitable land for them as compensation money determined for them would not be sufficient to cover land and construction of building.

The protesters said there were 110 houses in parcel of land proposed for acquisition. Considering the number of owners of the vacant land who have come forward to give their land, they are minuscule in number.

Out of the 110 house owners 20 people have already got money.

House owners said that although their demand for alternative land for them was agreed by the district administration in a consultative meeting in 2017, the same is not being considered now. With the state government having already sanctioned the money to be disbursed for the landowners, they said that they would be left with no place to go to.

Explaining the difficulties S Chandran, a house owner, said that a person who is residing in a house built on four cents of land would get a compensation of around Rs 30 to R 35 lakh. Given the land price in a 10 km radius, the money will be sufficient enough to purchase only four cents of land. They will be left with no money for the construction of a house for them.
