Baby born on London-Kochi AI flight; aircraft being diverted to Frankfurt for medical care of mom & newborn

New Delhi: Air India’s London-Kochi flight was rerouted to Frankfurt after a baby was born onboard the Boeing 787 of Tuesday.

The woman went in labour sometime after the plane took off from London at 1.21 pm local time (6.51 pm IST). Two doctors and four nurses who were among the passengers and the flight’s cabin crew helped deliver the baby. At that time, the aircraft was over Black Sea en route to India. Since the newborn and the mother needed medical care, the airline decided to divert to the nearest airport that was Frankfurt and turned in that direction. The aircraft landed in Frankfurt around 11 pm IST.

An AI spokesperson confirmed a team of two doctors and four nurses helped in the delivery. "All onboard equipment were used, two first-aid kits and one physician's kit. The baby and mother, who was seven months pregnant, are fine. The woman, newborn and one person travelling with her have alighted at Frankfurt.”

The aircraft was carrying over 210 people on board, including 193 economy and 11 business class passengers.

Many AI employees see the birth of a baby just ahead of the announcement of the airline’s future buyer, likely to be founder Tata Group, as a “good sign”. “We are awaiting the rebirth of our airline under the new owner, hopefully, the Tatas. This is the beginning of new beginnings,” said a long-time employee.
