Air Customs foil bid to smuggle gold in chapati maker at Karipur airport

Kondotty: The Air Customs Intelligence team seized 24 karat gold which was being smuggled in the form of thin round layers like a ‘chapati’. Sameej (29), a native of Malappuram was trying to smuggle the gold in a chapati maker.

Sameej arrived in Jeddah on a SpiceJet flight. He made 796 grams of gold worth Rs 39 lakh into thin round shaped sheets and smuggled them hiding inside a chapati maker. The gold was brought in check-in luggage.

In another case, gold was seized while trying to smuggle it as a compound. The gold was seized from Kozhikode Thalayad native PA Shameer. The youth arrived from Muscat on an Air India Express flight and attempted to smuggle 1.3 kilograms of gold inside socks.

Deputy Commissioner TA Kiran and Superintendents CP Sabeesh, Santhosh John, Umadevi, TN Vijaya, Premprakash Meena and Pranay Kumar foiled the attempt to smuggle gold.
