555 gms gold ingot worth Rs. 27.31 lakh seized at airport, one arrested

Chennai: Officials of the Customs Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) seized 555 gms of gold valued at Rs 27.31 lakh from a passenger who was arrested on his arrival from Sharjah at the Anna International airport here today.

A release from the office of the Principal Commissioner of Customs said, based on intelligence, a 31-year-old male passenger, who arrived from Sharjah by an Air Arabia flight was intercepted at the exit by the AIU officers.

On examination of his person, four gold bundles concealed in rectum, totally weighing 650 gms, were recovered which on extraction resulted in recovery of one gold ingot weighing 555 grams valued at Rs 27.31 lakh.

The same was seized under Customs Act, 1962 and the passenger was arrested.

Further investigation is under progress.
