Flight arrivals at Chennai airport suspended till Thursday evening

Chennai: The arrival of flights to Chennai airport will remain suspended till 6pm on Thursday, November 11, due to severe rain and heavy crosswinds, said the Chennai Airport authorities.

"Due to severe rains and heavy crosswinds, arrivals at #AAI Chennai Airport will remain suspended from 1315 hrs to 1800 hrs, today. Departures will continue. The decision has been taken considering the safety aspect of passengers and severity of wind," the Chennai Airport tweeted.

In another tweet, the Chennai Airport said that it regretted the inconvenience caused to passengers due to severe weather conditions and asked flyers to contact the respective airlines for updates regarding schedules.

Earlier in the day, Deputy Director-General of Meteorology S Balachandran had said that most districts in northern Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall towards the evening. The forecast was attributed to the depression over the Bay of Bengal that is likely to cross the coast between north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh on Thursday evening. Chennai would also receive "strong" winds of up to 45kmph.

So far, 14 people have lost their lives in the state due to heavy downpours, according to Kumar Jayanth, Principal Secretary of the Revenue Department.
