Mangaluru: Dubai flight charges hurt people returning after Covid lay off

Mangaluru: Those who were waiting to travel to Gulf countries including Dubai after a long Covid-induced gap are in for a shock as flight charges have gone up 200 percent. On November 6, ticket prices to Dubai from Mangaluru, Bengaluru and Goa stood at Rs 21,000, 22,000, Rs 28,000 and Rs 31,000 on November 7 and Rs 38,000 to Rs 50,000 on November 8.

Before Covid, ticket prices to Kuwait stood at Rs 13,000 but the cost has now gone up to Rs 1.3 lac. If they stay back, they risk losing their jobs. All the airlines are trying to make good the losses they suffered during the Covid period and they are sucking the blood of workers going to the Gulf, says a travel agent from here.

People who came back during the lockdown and got stuck, are returning to jobs now. Airlines are reaping benefits out of their predicament. Another travel agent predicts that these prices will prevail for two months and that those who are not in a hurry to fly can wait for prices to fall.

In the past, people from Mangaluru used to take flights from Kannur, Bengaluru, Kochi, Goa etc to avoid paying high ticket prices. But this time, the prices have gone up there too. Because of compulsory Covid tests, the passengers have to reach the airports five hours in advance.
