Andaman resumes IAF Dornier Aircraft Service for General Public for two remote Islands

Port Blair: After a long gap, the Directorate of Civil Aviation, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, has decided to resume the Indian Air Force Dornier Aircraft service for General Public to Car Nicobar and Great Nicobar Islands of Nicobar District.

Along with this, decision has also been taken to increase the frequency of helicopter services to various Islands w.e.f November 5, 2021.

As per the new schedule, there will be weekly 2 flights of Indian Air Force for public. Dornier aircraft will be operated for Car Nicobar and Campbell Bay on every Monday and Friday.

Earlier on October 7, 2021, the Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Kuldeep Rai Sharma had requested the Chief Secretary of A & N Administration to resume the Dornier Flight Service for Car Nicobar and Campbell Bay for Islanders.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary the Member of Parliament had pointed out that on August 05, 2016, for the first time Dornier flight service by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration with the help of Indian the Indian Air Force was started in Islands, carrying 10 passengers to Car Nicobar and Campbell Bay and vice versa, twice a week.

The MP highlighted that the A&N Administration had launched this service to augment the airtransport capacity to Nicobar District and after the launch of this facility, with the help of the Indian Air Force, the people of the southern group of Islands were largely benefited.

Earlier, on August 5, 2016, the then Lt. Governor, A & N Islands, Lt. Gen. A. K. Singh (Retd.) had flagged off the Dornier flight services by Indian Air force between Port Blair-Car Nicobar & Campbell bay. The Dornier 228 aircraft is a state-of-the-Art, twin-engine turbo-prop aircraft, which can cruise at a speed of 200 kts. The aircraft is fitted with all modern avionics and is widely used for executive transport by the Indian Air force.

The A& N Administration had launched this service to augment the air-transport capacity to Nicobar District.
