Protests by SpiceJet employees over salary dues spreads across the country

Protest by SpiceJet engineering staff has now spread all over the country with staff at nine key airports protesting over ‘restoration of salaries and leaves’. The move is set to impact flight operations of the airline.

The protests, which started in Delhi, have now spread to Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Cochin, Hyderabad, Patna and Pune, people in the know said.

Employees at Delhi had earlier told ET that people on night shift are protesting after completing their work and people on morning shift did not report for work.

“Our demands are simple - restore salaries and leave, especially now because things are returning to normalcy. We also demand payment of deferred salaries and appraisals,” a protesting employee told ET.

The employees say that they are still being paid only 60% of their earlier salary. “We are paid for work on an hourly basis and our leaves also need to be restored. Plus, we are not getting our usual weekly offs too,” another employee added.

While employees in Delhi said that their salaries were paid last Saturday, some employees in Ahmedabad said that their salaries have not been paid.

An airline spokesperson said that talks are on with the protesting employees. “SpiceJet’s flight operations are functioning normally. A section of employees having some issues have met with senior officials and the matter is being resolved,” the spokesperson said.

While the impact of strike by engineering staff may not be seen immediately on flight operations, flight operations are likely to get impacted, if this protest continues.
