Air India’s GDS Closure Affects Ticket Bookings

Ahmedabad: Travel agents and ticketing agencies in the city were unable to book tickets for Air India flights on Wednesday owing to the closure of GDS (global distribution system) platforms that they use. According to the Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI) sources, Air India’s GDS used by agents for ticket bookings has closed down, causing big problems to thousands of passengers.

International travel is already facing a lot of restrictions due to the ongoing pandemic. Given the circumstances, closing of GDS of India’s biggest airline, Air India, has created acute inconvenience for travel agents and agencies, and passengers.

TAFI chairman and Akshar Travels CMD Manish Sharma said, “Travel agencies and agents use the global distribution system, which includes Galileo, Amadeus and Saber, to distribute air tickets. For some time now, Air India has remained closed down its GDS for travel agents resulting in major problems for them.”

“The closure of GDS has meant that tickets can be booked only from Air India website at the air fares listed on it. Passengers are forced to buy tickets at expensive rates. They also face issues with travel dates, refunds and cancellations,” he said.
