Karnataka govt says 1st Omicron patient 'escaped'; search on for 10 other missing passengers

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government on Friday said the first Omicron patient "escaped" the state. The state government had on Thursday said the patient had presented a negative Covid test report from a private lab.

The health ministry informed on Thursday about the first cases of Omicron varient in India, both of which are from Karnataka.

Karnataka revenue minister R Ashok said: "We've lodged a complaint with High Grounds police to understand what went wrong at Shangri-La Hotel that the person escaped."

The minister said the state government is also trying to trace and test all 10 people who had gone missing from the airport. "By tonight all 10 people, who had reportedly gone missing, should be traced and tested," added the minister.

The first patient, a 66-year-old, came to the state from South Africa on November 20 and left India seven days later, according to data shared by the Karnataka government.
