Slow-Moving Conveyor Belt Delays Five Flights

Ahmedabad: Five domestic flights from Ahmedabad were delayed as the conveyor belt of the in-line baggage handling and screening system was running too slow, sources told Mirror. Due to this problem, passengers had to face considerable hardship as it took more than the usual time to load the baggage. The flights took off after a delay of up to 40 minutes.

The flights that departed later than their scheduled departure time were: Three Indigo Airlines flights connecting Ahmedabad to Nagpur, Delhi and Chennai; a Spicejet flight to Amritsar and a Go Air flight to Chandigarh.

Sources said, “The issue was caused because of the old baggage system. This was not the first time. In the past too, the passengers faced the same difficulties. The issue has not been resolved despite frequent representations made by airline companies.”

On the other hand, the airport officials shifted the blame on the companies, alleging that their staff was not adhering to the protocol to handle and load the baggage.

“They don’t maintain the distance between two bags during the process of loading it into the machine. Therefore it gets trapped in the machine. We have already deputed the staff for smooth operation of the equipment,” said official sources.
