International airport at Silchar soon, formalities complete: MP

Silchar: Silchar will get an international airport soon as various formalities related to the project have been completed, local MP Rajdeep Roy said on Tuesday.

Roy, a BJP MP, told the media that the Centre has given an affirmative response to the construction of an international airport in Silchar and that various formalities regarding its materialisation have been wrapped up. “Issues related to the site selection are there, but they are expected to be resolved very soon,” he said.

“The airport would be set up in an area spread over 870 acres and the announcement of the mega project would be made by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in January,” Roy said.

South Assam has a domestic airport at Kumbhirgram, 29 km from here. Built by the British as an RAF station in 1944, it is also a civil enclave airport as it is under the control of the Indian Air Force. It is the fourth busiest airport in the Northeast after Guwahati, Agartala and Imphal.
