Bengaluru airport adds more RT-PCR machines, offers food and beverage services to all passengers

Bengaluru: Amid the Omicron variant scare, new restrictions have been put in place for all foreign arrivals making it mandatory to undergo an RT-PCR test on arrival. This could be a problem to handle such a large number of people, but the airport staff at Kempegowda International Airport handled the process with ease.

There are around 50 new testing machines to scale up testing capacities and they have provided passengers with a free Wi-Fi time limit from 45 minutes to four hours.

The Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) in a release stated, "The Auriga Research Private Limited, which was operating with 8 Express PCR test machines, has now added 50 more machines, increasing its hourly test capacity."

The airport authorities make sure children do not face much hassles during an RT-PCR test and the seating area has been expanded with proper physical distancing in mind.

The release added, "To provide a safe and secure experience, BIAL has set up dedicated testing booths and seating measures with greater emphasis on safe distancing. Food and beverage services are offered to all passengers."

Furthermore, swab tests are collected as early as possible before immigration/customs screening so that passengers receive their reports before they collect their baggage.

Sampreeth Kotian, Head Terminal Operations, Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru told India TodayTV that apart from ensuring proper seating for passengers, keeping in mind social distancing, they have set up a pre-registration area where the seating capacity is 450 passengers.

Explaining how it works for passengers who arrive from abroad, he says, "We encourage the airlines to make their passengers pre-book the testing. Once the payment is done, we send them to the swab collection area. You will be given a swab kit and then your swab is collected. You will then move to the thermal screening area which is done by the Government of Karnataka (GoK) and the APHO team. They will check your RT-PCR certificate from your origin state."

Once all these procedures are completed, passengers move towards immigration where customs screen your handbags and then you are allowed to move to the baggage area.
