Mosquitoes at Kolkata airport frustrate flyers; staff files complaint

Kolkata: Chaotic scenes were witnessed at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport or the Kolkata Airport as the presence of mosquitoes made life miserable for flyers and airline staff. With the onset of winter, the Kolkata airport is crowded again with passengers, similar to pre-Covid times and along with them, the mosquitoes are back in action too.

From terminal to airport buses and even inside the airport, the passengers and the airline staff complained of mosquitoes buzzing and stinging everywhere.

According to a report published in the Times of India (TOI), the terminal becomes a vulnerable place for mosquitoes due to the presence of long grass and wet areas inside the airport premises. The location of the airport in close proximity to dengue-prone areas like Keshtopur and Baguiati also attracts mosquitoes, the report said.

Sutirtha Basu, who regularly travels to Delhi, was quoted by TOI as saying that due to the presence of mosquitoes stinging in the security area it was difficult for her to wear slippers. She said that she had to shift to her uncomfortable ankle-high boots.

Miffed over the mosquitoes at the airport, many frustrated flyers took to social media to narrate their experience. Dinesh Agarwal, an international flyer, who was waiting for his RT-PCR report at the airport, wrote, "People have to wait for almost 6 hours with mosquitoes at night for their results after a journey. It's a recipe for disaster. Request for your kind intervention."

As per the reports, another Twitter user appealed to the Kolkata airport and the DGCA authorities to abide by the Swachh Bharat protocols and get rid of the mosquitoes from the airport.
