Passengers miss flights as truckers block airport road

Mohali: Several passengers missed their flights as members of the All-India Truck Ekta Union blocked the airport road crossing on Zirakpur-Patiala highway for two hours on Monday afternoon.

All the four roads leading to Patiala, Zirakpur, Mohali and towards Derabassi were blocked by the protesters, leading to serpentine queues of vehicles on all four sides.

Commuters were seen pleading with the protesters to give way, but their request fell on deaf ears.

Jignesh Patel, who was to board a flight for Mumbai, said, “My flight time was 6pm and I was stuck here in a traffic jam, all because of the protesters. It is not possible for me to take another route at this stage. I know I will surely miss the flight.”

Another passenger going to the airport said, “We had to swap taxis when we saw that there is no other way out. We walked across the road and took another taxi also stuck in the jam on the other side of the road. But much of our time was wasted and it seems that we may not be allowed to board the flight now.”

District vice-president of the truck union Amandeep Singh said, “During the 2017 assembly elections in Punjab, all the truck unions in the state were dissolved by the Congress-led government by then CM Capt Amarinder Singh. But now, we demand that Channi government should allow revival of these truck unions. We also demand that the rates of transport should be increased as truck operators were already suffering from economic downturn.”
